The route

Levada do Brasileiro takes place completely within the bounds of the parish of Porto Moniz. As with most of the walks in Porto Moniz, The Laurissilva forest is the main setting.

To get to the levada, first walk through a trail found a few metres above. The trail is located in Pico da Pedreira (ER 105), at the top of a long straight section of road.

Follow the trail until you get to a small meadow with two paths. Take the path to the left. You may find cattle grazing in this area. Although accustomed to human presence, cows are very sensitive (and large) creatures especially when accompanied by calves. Keep to yourself and do not disturb the wildlife.

You will quickly come to a tree trunk obstructing the path ahead. The trail that leads down to the levada is located on the left. Before walking down, take a moment to admire the pleasant views of Fanal and the village of Ribeira da Janela down by the shore.

The vegetation is quite intense as you plunge into the heart of the forest painted with infinite shades of green. A carpet of leaves covers the ground contrasting with the green of the forest. Walking poles are highly recommended on this walk as there are a few slopes throughout.

The story of how the levada got its name is not certain (Levada do Brasileiro means Levada of the Brazilian man), however, the most likely explanation is that one of the former owners, João Nicolau da Câmara was a Madeiran immigrant living in Brazil.

During this levada, you will have the opportunity to admire the natural Tree Heather tunnels that transport you through unique surroundings. The geology is also worth mentioning. You will find interesting phenomena that coexist harmoniously with the man-made channels.

After some time, you will reach the second descent that leads to the next part of the levada. To get there, walk down the trail set within the vegetation until you get to an opening from where you can view the valley. This area is fairly eroded and at risk of rockfall. Proceed with caution.

Follow the trail to return back into the forest. Continue ahead until you get to the next descent, found on the right. Back on the levada, keep to the trail until you arrive at the reservoir.

At the beginning of the third level, you will pass a small cascade that falls into the channel below. Surrounded by nature, it is an excellent place to stop and rest.

Up ahead, you will reach the most exposed part of the walk. The path crosses a small stream that receives water from above. Essentially, you will be walking under a waterfall. The trail in narrow and has no barriers for protection. It is important that you do not rush to the other side. Take out your waterproofs and calmly walk to the other side.

You will notice that the vegetation starts to thin out, an indication that you are getting close to the end. Continue ahead where you will eventually arrive at the road. The water from the Levada is directed into the reservoir, located on the other side of the road. From there, it continues to descent via a levada towards Santa in Porto Moniz.

To return, retrace your steps or walk up the main road towards your vehicle.
