O Percurso
Levada do Moinho, also known as Levada Grande, is one of the main attractions in the parish of Achadas da Cruz due to its historical, agricultural and ethnographic importance, second only to the local cable car.
Having been restored, Levada do Moinho was initially a private channel, funded by locals who were the only ones entitled to its use.
Moinho means mill in Portuguese. This levada's purpose was to supply water to the various watermills that once existed along the channel. Nowadays, only one, Moinho da Achada, remains standing (albeit in ruins).
For the most part, the levada takes you through the lush green Laurissilva forest, where water is plentiful.
