Shortly after starting the climb, you will reach a clearing where you can admire the valley beneath you.

From here, the vegetation thickens, although there are a few openings between the trees that reveal superb views of the north coast. Beware of the edges, as there are some vertiginous points.

With the passing of time, the old paths that have long ceased to be used tend to erode, becoming narrow and irregular. Thus, on this kind of walk experience is a must, as is being physically able.

The Laurissilva forest is the most prevalent type of forest during this walk, however, you will find small patches of the exotic Eucalyptus and Pine tree throughout.

Arriving at Ribeira da Galinhaça, the tinkling music of water running down the mountainside compliments perfectly with the sound of nature.

The viewpoint overlooking the neighbouring municipalities of São Vicente and Santana is a focal point for observation. As you continue to climb the mountainside the Laurssilva forest becomes scarce and the terrain irregular, until you get to Cerca.

In the last few metres of the climb, now in the moorlands you will come to a signpost indicating "Seixal" and a dirt road where you should turn left. You may find cattle grazing along this section. If so, keep to yourself and do not make any sudden movements. While these animals are accustomed to human presence, they are sensitive (and large) creatures that are very protective of their young.

The path takes you towards a meadow, follow the track stopping at the "Fio" viewpoint in Fanal before continuing. A little detour worth making, given the potential landscape you may find. The wire was used to transport materials and produce to the population in Chão da Ribeira avoiding the long and arduous journey by foot.

Rejoin the path towards Fanal where the landscape changes dramatically in the presence of the ancient Fetid Laurels. Mist and fog are very frequent here due to the high altitude and although quite stunning can be dangerous. Take care not to get lost and keep warm as the temperatures can drop rapidly.

At the next signpost, turn down to the left towards the Forestry house. On weekends, it is quite common to see families using the fireplaces dotted around this area making traditional dishes like Espetada. You will cross one last signpost indicating Paul da Serra.

To complete this walk, walk down towards the forestry house where you will find the ER 209.
